Raid the Archive: The de Menil Years at Rice (Exhibition Panel), October 14, 2012, 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM
Symposium
Visual and Dramatic Arts
Location:
Rice Media Center
Film Auditorium
Description:
In 1969, John and Dominique de Menil founded the Media Center and the Rice
Museum (known as the “Art Barn”), which were an integral part of the arts on
campus then, and continue to play a significant and inspirational role today. In
alignment with Rice University’s own commitments and goals, the de Menils’
vision for the Media Center and Rice Museum was to provide avenues through
which people from a variety of backgrounds and disciplines could work together to
promote education, collaboration, and exchange. The panel discussions are presented in conjunction
with 'Raid The Archive: The de Menil Years At Rice.' They explore Menil-era Media Center
experimentation, production, and presentation, and the rich history of Rice Museum
exhibitions. The panelists were all centrally involved with either the Media Center or
Rice Museum during the years of Menil activity. The exhibition and panels intend to
reveal the extraordinary partnership between Rice and the Menil, and will highlight
the importance of art and community at Rice. Exhibition on view September 27-November 9; opening reception, October 12, 6:00 p.m.; companion film series, October 13, 7:00 p.m.; exhibition panel, October 14, 1:00-5:00 p.m. This exhibition is curated by John Sparagana and Katia Zavistovski. The exhibition and related events are free and open to the public.
