English and Philosophy Majors | Politics, Law and Social Thought Minor | Wiess College

I am studying English and Philosophy, with a special interest in the intersection of these two disciplines. Specifically, I am curious about the role fictional narratives play in philosophical thought and broader social change. What can fiction do that philosophy alone cannot?

My current Moody research project tracks Houston high-school literature curriculums and discusses the role literary education plays in the development of school children. I follow and analyze the two main schools of thought surrounding literary education: one which prioritizes the appreciation of aesthetics and another which prioritizes the cultivation of cultural empathy. Ultimately, I argue that a successful literary education can accomplish both.

Alongside my Moody research, I am also working on a philosophical essay centered on the metaphysical question of externally v.s internally verified knowledge. Beginning with Descartes and moving through Russel and Moore, I argue that Moore's conception of realism fails to address the original question of skepticism raised by Descartes.

Outside of my current projects, I enjoy creative writing and journalism. My extracurriculars include working as the Inventory Manager of Rice Coffeehouse, serving as the interim secretary for the Rice American Civil Liberties Union and dancing for Rice Dance Theatre.
