Dasseny Arreola

English Major (Creative Writing) | Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Minor | Lovett College

Hi!! I'm Dasseny, and I'm a junior majoring in English with a creative writing concentration. If I’m being completely honest, I’d love to just live in a cottage in the woods and write novels—but we live in a society so I’m pursuing English literary research too for now, haha. I love to read and write, and I think fictional narratives can say a lot about the human condition. That’s why, for my research, I’d like to continue studying literature and how that can reflect back into meaningful ideals in today’s life. Other than that, I love to draw and play video games in my free time, but I’m usually too busy to do those things here. I’m an executive producer of the MOB (we write the shows), a Peer Academic Advisor at Lovett, and I’m currently actually making a lot of research headway with my other fellowship (so grateful to the Mellon Mays!). I’m also in my archaeology era(™) right now and might double major with it at this rate for the animals (my zooarch. lab class is so fun)—I’m currently minoring in ecology and evolutionary biology for the same reason as well. It's nice to meet you!

Research Interests: I'm interested in the depiction of dogs in literature and art, and right now I'm looking into how a lot of our conceptions of dogs/pet-keeping came from Victorian culture (Animal Studies and Othering). I'm also really interested in coffee material culture and cafes as third places.
