Thien joined the Rice community in August 2012 as the center and events coordinator for the Critical and Cultural Theory program (3CT), under the direction of Dr. Cary Wolfe. Prior to joining Rice, he earned BA degrees in Art History and General Business from the University of St. Thomas (right down the street from Rice) where he also worked as a staff member. Thien also holds a degree in Interior Design and has a multitude of experience and knowledge in the hospitality and events industry.
His past experience working at both public and private sector institutions of higher learning has afforded him the knowledge of the student life; both social and academic. In addition to continuing his support of the 3CT Program, Thien’s new responsibilities will include providing academic and administrative support for the Humanities’ interdisciplinary programs. He also serves as a member of the School of Humanities’ events team, along with Nyeva Agwunobi and Andrew Stefl. With his particular expertise in event planning and execution, he will be a resource for the whole school by providing guidance, contacts, best practices, and tips and tricks for events and activities.
Thien continues to freelance with residential and commercial spaces on the weekends as well as coordinating private parties, weddings and even baby showers. You can even catch him scoping out the local thrift shops and flea markets, discovering treasures and unique furniture pieces.
