Promotion and Tenure Resources
Each year, faculty on tenure track are reviewed for promotion and tenure in their sixth year of appointment at the rank of assistant professor (on tenure track). The review is initiated by the department chair, in consultation with the faculty member, and a recommendation is made to the dean of the School of Humanities in the spring semester. After review and approval to go forward by the dean, the chair of the department calls for a faculty meeting of senior, tenured faculty to vote to take the case for promotion (with tenure) forward. After the vote, the department then sends the results to the dean with a recommendation to go forward to the Provost, Promotion and Tenure Committee, President, and Rice Board of Trustees.
The contact person in the Office of the Dean of Humanities for all promotion and tenure issues is Paula Platt, Program Administrator in the Office of the Dean of Humanities.
