Dr. Chao graduated from Wellesley College and received her master's and doctoral degrees from Rice University, where she currently teaches as an adjunct lecturer in in the History Department, focusing on the field of modern Chinese history, and in the Program in Poverty, Justice, and Human Capabilities. She currently serves as a co-chair of the Rice Gallery Patron Group, a member of the Advisory Board for the T.T. and W.F. Chao Center for Asian Studies and the Center for the Study of Women, Gender, and Sexuality. She previously served as a member of the Shepherd Society board in 2005. Mr. and Dr. Chao served on the Rice Parent's Committee from 1996 to 2003. They were awarded Rice's Meritorious Service Award in 2010, and were honored by Rice as Association for Fundraising Professionals National Philanthropy Day honorees in 1999. In 2006, Rice again honored Dr. Chao as Association for Fundraising Professionals National Philanthropy Day honoree.

Mr. and Dr. Chao have supported numerous areas of Rice including endowing the T.T. and W.F. Chao Center for Asian Studies. They have also supported the School of Architecture, the Baker Institute's Transnational China Project, the Shepherd School of Music, and created the T.T. and W.F. Chao Endowed Chair in Chemistry, which is currently held by Professor Jim Tour.
