Fall 2017 Faculty Speakers
Ian Schimmel, lecturer in creative writing in the Department of English and faculty mentor for R2: The Rice Review, presented "Personalizing Politics: When Fiction Feels more Real than Reality," at Brown College. Drawing upon Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's short story, The Arrangements, Schimmel discussed how fiction writers create realistic effects.
Nicolas Shumway, dean of humanities and professor in the Department of Spanish, Portuguese, and Latin American Studies, appeared to discuss "Why Humanities Students Should Sound Smarter than Everyone Else," at Duncan College.
David Worth, senior lecturer and director of forensics, spoke on "Recognizing Fallacies in Argument," at Sid Richardson College.
Lida Oukaderova, assistant professor in the Department of Art History and director of the Cinema and Media Studies minor, offered "The Face of Film," at McMurty College.
Sayuri Guthrie Shimizu, professor in the Department of History spoke on "Global Baseball," at Weiss College.
Diane Wolfthal, professor in the Department of Art History, gave a presentation "Seeing Sex in Medieval Art," at Will Rice College.

Humanities faculty are well represented in the ranks of college magisters and residential associates (RA‚Äôs)¬† Currently, the following Humanities faculty reside in the colleges:
--Jose Aranda and Krista Comer, both associate professors of English are magisters at Brown College
--Gwen Bradford, assistant professor of philosophy, is resident associate at Will Rice College
--Esther Fernandez, assistant professor of Spanish, Portuguese, and Latin American Studies, is a resident at Weiss College
--Caleb McDaniel, associate professor of history, is magister at Duncan College
--Aysha Pollnitz, assistant professor of history, is resident associate at Baker College
--Ian Schimmel, lecturer in creative writing in the Department of English, is resident associate at Jones College

--Laura Richardson is Spatial Humanities project manager fellow with the Humanities Research Center.¬† She earned her Ph.D. in Rice's English Department.¬† She is resident associate at Lovett College.
--Emerson Zora Hamsa is a graduate student earning her Ph.D. in the English Department.¬† She is resident associate at Lovett College.
Peer Academic Advisors
Each of Rice‚Äôs residential colleges maintains a team of students who offer academic advising to their student peers.
In 2017-2018, the student director of peer academic advising, coordinating all peer academic advisors, is Susannah Wright, a Classical Studies major.¬† Rice‚Äôs Office of Academic Advising maintains a list of current peer academic advisors here.
