The Campbell Lecture Series in the School of Humanities is supported by a generous gift from T.C. Campbell, '34 through the Campbell Fund. Each year, the series brings a distinguished humanities scholar to campus to give lectures on a topic of broad humanistic interest. These are open to the entire Rice and Houston communities.
Previous Campbell lecturers include Josiah McElheny (2018), George Chauncey (2017), Anne Wilkes Tucker (2016), Michael Petry (2015), Robert Wilson (2014), Patrick Summers (2013), Stanley Fish (2012), Zadie Smith (2010), James Cuno (2009), Stephen Greenblatt (2008), Alix Ohlin (2007), Ha Jin (2006) and Robert Pinsky (2005).
Through a special arrangement with the University of Chicago Press, the lectures are later published as a book. The most recent book published in the Campbell Lecture Series is The Spirit of This Place: How Music Illuminates the Human Spirit by Patrick Summers (2018).
