Each February, the dean reviews budget submissions for the entire School of Humanities, assessing how to leverage existing restricted endowments and determining where new funding may have the most strategic impact. While this process involves considerable planning and anticipation of future needs, it cannot always accommodate the student or faculty emergency that arises, the unexpected opportunity to partner with a national or international organization to bring a prize-winning scholar or academic conference to Rice, or the research package required to recruit a stellar new philosopher who focuses on ethics.
