Support the Medical Humanities

Today, as our world is transformed by artificial intelligence and machine learning, when the medical profession is calling on us to deliver more humane and equitable health care, we are beckoned by an ethical imperative to develop more informed, more capable leaders and citizens with the uniquely human qualities of creativity, imagination, critical thinking, moral reasoning and empathy.

Yet today, the Medical Humanities at Rice stands at a crossroads. To meet the interests of Rice students—undergraduate and graduate students alike—we must attract and sustain preeminent scholars by increasing our support for endowed faculty experts and visiting scholars.

Through significant new investments, we seek as well to expand our curricular offerings; retain our thriving minor while building a new undergraduate major; advance student internship, practicum, and travel abroad opportunities for all Rice students; expand the Medical Futures Lab at Rice; and create a new graduate certificate in Medical Humanities.

By expanding the Medical Humanities at Rice, we will ensure that large numbers of Rice students graduate as humanist scientists and scientifically engaged humanists, thereby capitalizing on the established strengths of our faculty while enhancing Rice’s reputation as a socially and ethically engaged research university.
